Accommodation for the Everest Base Camp Trek

During the trek, you will stay in mountain teahouse lodges run by local Sherpa families. Rooms are private twin-share bedrooms equipped with wooden beds, foam mattresses, clean bedsheets, and pillows. In Kathmandu, you will stay at a premium 4-star hotel (e.g., Hotel Mulberry / Fairfield by Marriott) with private en-suite bathroom and buffet breakfast.

At lower elevations (Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar), private en-suite bathrooms and electrical charging inside the room are frequently available. Above 4,000m (Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep), lodges become more rustic with clean communal Western-style or squat toilets.

💡 Sleeping Comfort Tip: While blankets are provided by lodges, rooms are unheated. We provide a complimentary sanitized -20°C alpine down sleeping bag for maximum night warmth.

Available Food in Everest Base Camp Trek

All meals (13 Breakfasts, 11 Lunches, 11 Dinners) on the trail are included in your package. You can order fresh dishes directly from the extensive teahouse menus prepared by trained lodge cooks.

Popular Menu Options:

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal porridge, muesli with hot milk, Tibetan bread with honey, eggs (fried, boiled, scrambled, omelets), hash browns, pancakes, and ginger lemon honey tea.
  • Lunch & Dinner: Traditional Nepali Dal Bhat Power 24 Hour (lentil soup, rice, fresh vegetable curry, spinach, and papadum with free refills!), Sherpa potato stew (Shakpa), momo dumplings, fried noodles (Chowmein), thukpa noodle soup, pasta, pizza, and garlic soup.
🥗 Health Recommendation: We strongly advise sticking to a vegetarian diet above Namche Bazaar (3,440m) because all meat is carried up on foot without refrigeration. Garlic soup is served every evening as a natural altitude aid.

Kathmandu to Lukla Flight Details & Alternatives

The flight from Kathmandu (or Manthali Airport in Ramechhap during peak seasons) to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,846m) is a world-renowned 25-minute scenic twin-otter mountain flight offering panoramic views of the central and eastern Himalayas.

Peak Season Ramechhap Rerouting: During high trekking seasons (March–May and October–November), Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reroutes Lukla flights via Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) to avoid Kathmandu airspace traffic. We provide comfortable private tourist transport from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (approx. 4 hours) included in your package.

🚁 Helicopter Upgrade Option: To avoid driving to Ramechhap or during adverse weather delays, private or shared helicopter flights direct from Kathmandu to Lukla are available upon request.

Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty & Fitness Requirements

The Everest Base Camp Trek is graded Grade 4 (Moderate to Strenuous). No technical climbing, ropes, or mountaineering skills are required. However, you will walk 5 to 7 hours per day across 130 km of alpine terrain reaching a maximum altitude of 5,545m at Kala Patthar.

Recommended Training: 8 to 12 weeks of cardiovascular training (jogging, stair climbing, cycling, hill walking with a 5kg daypack). Mental stamina and steady, slow breathing ("Bistari Bistari") are the secrets to success.

🏆 98.4% Success Rate: Our 14-day schedule incorporates 2 full acclimatization rest days in Namche and Dingboche, giving our trekkers an industry-leading summit rate.

Best Time & Seasons for Everest Base Camp Trek

There are two prime trekking seasons in the Khumbu Himalayas:

  • Spring (March to May): Warm days (15°C to 20°C in valleys), blooming pink and red rhododendron forests, crystal clear mornings, and vibrant climbing expeditions setting up tents at Base Camp.
  • Autumn (September to November): The most popular season with stable weather, ultra-clear post-monsoon mountain visibility, mild daytime temperatures, and deep blue skies.
❄️ Winter & Monsoon: Winter (Dec–Feb) is dry and quiet with crisp skies but freezing nights (-15°C). Summer/Monsoon (Jun–Aug) brings heavy rain, low cloud cover, and flight disruptions.

Altitude Sickness, Symptoms & Acclimatization Safety

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone above 2,500m regardless of fitness level. Symptoms include mild headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.

Our Safety Protocol:

  • Twice-daily pulse oximeter blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate monitoring.
  • Portable emergency medical oxygen tank and comprehensive first-aid kit carried on all departures.
  • Drink 3 to 4 liters of clean water daily and avoid alcohol and smoking completely.
  • Diamox (Acetazolamide) 125mg–250mg can be used as a preventative aid after consulting your doctor.
🚨 Emergency Rule: If severe symptoms persist, our certified Sherpa guides immediately coordinate descent to a lower elevation and dispatch 24/7 helicopter evacuation if necessary.

Nepal Visa & Sagarmatha National Park Permits

Nepal Tourist Visa: Available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu). Fee: $30 USD (15 Days), $50 USD (30 Days), or $125 USD (90 Days). Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity.

Trekking Permits Included in Your Package:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000 / ~$25 USD)
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit (NPR 2,000 / ~$17 USD)
✅ Hassle-Free Paperwork: We handle 100% of the permit processing and government paperwork prior to your arrival in Nepal.

Drinking Water, Hot Showers & Electricity on the Trail

Drinking Water: To eliminate single-use plastic pollution in Sagarmatha National Park, bottled water is restricted in upper regions. You can purchase boiled filtered water at lodges ($1.50–$3 per liter) or fill tap water and treat it with Aquatabs / Katadyn water filter.

Hot Showers: Available at most teahouses powered by gas geysers or solar heating ($3 to $5 per shower). Above Dingboche (4,410m), we recommend wet wipes to prevent catching chills.

Battery Charging: Solar/hydro outlets are available in teahouse dining rooms ($2–$4 per device/power bank). Bring a 20,000mAh power bank.

Travel Insurance & Emergency Helicopter Evacuation

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all Everest Base Camp trekkers. Your policy must explicitly cover:

  • High-altitude alpine trekking up to 6,000 meters (20,000 ft).
  • Emergency helicopter search, rescue, and medical evacuation.
  • Hospital medical treatment in Kathmandu and trip cancellation.
🛡️ Recommended Providers: World Nomads, Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance, Global Rescue, and Allianz Global Assistance.

Packing List, Luggage Allowance & Porter Guidelines

Weight Limit: Domestic flights to Lukla strictly enforce a 15 kg (33 lbs) allowance per person (10 kg main duffel bag carried by porters + 5 kg daypack carried by you).

Key Gear Needed:

  • Moisture-wicking thermal base layers, fleece mid-layer, and waterproof Gore-Tex outer jacket.
  • Sturdy broken-in waterproof trekking boots with ankle support + merino wool socks.
  • UV400 Category 4 polarized sunglasses, sunhat, and warm thermal beanie.
  • Trekking poles, headlamp with extra batteries, and dry bags for electronics.
🧳 Gear Provided Free: We provide an 80L waterproof duffel bag, -20°C alpine sleeping bag, and down jacket for the duration of the trek at no extra cost.

Internet, Wi-Fi & Mobile SIM Card Connectivity

Mobile 4G Data: Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) offer 4G mobile reception up to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Pangboche. We assist you in obtaining a tourist SIM card in Kathmandu ($10 for 20GB data).

Everest Link Satellite Wi-Fi: High-speed prepaid Wi-Fi cards (Everest Link) can be purchased at all teahouses across the Khumbu region ($5 for 10GB / $20 for 30GB usable across the entire trek route).

Money, ATMs & Trail Expense Budgeting (Cash in NPR)

There are no reliable ATMs above Namche Bazaar (3,440m). While Namche has several ATM machines, they occasionally run out of cash due to power or satellite outages.

Recommended Cash to Bring: We recommend exchanging and carrying approximately $200 to $250 USD in Nepali Rupees (NPR) cash per person for personal trail expenses (hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi cards, snacks, hot bakery treats, and guide/porter tipping).

Solo Female Trekker Safety & Private Room Policies

Nepal is widely recognized as one of the safest destinations in the world for solo female travelers. On all our Everest Base Camp departures, solo female trekkers are assigned private single rooms (subject to seasonal lodge capacity) or paired exclusively with other female travelers.

Our licensed Sherpa guides adhere strictly to international traveler safeguarding standards. Female guide requests can also be arranged upon advance notice.

Ethical Porter Welfare, Fair Wage Guarantee & Tipping

We are strict signatories of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) guidelines. Every porter on our expeditions carries a maximum load of 15kg per trekker (total 30kg for 2 trekkers), receives above-market wages, warm mountain footwear and jackets, full emergency medical insurance, and proper teahouse shelter.

Tipping Guideline: While discretionary, a standard tip of $120–$150 USD per trekker is customarily pooled at the end of the trek in Lukla and split between your guide and porter.

Acclimatization Rest Days: Namche Bazaar & Dingboche Strategy

Our 14-day schedule incorporates two active acclimatization rest days following the golden rule of mountaineering: "Climb High, Sleep Low".

  • Day 4 (Namche Bazaar - 3,440m): Hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m) for your first panoramic sight of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku, then descend back to Namche to sleep.
  • Day 7 (Dingboche - 4,410m): Climb the ridge of Nagarjun Hill (5,100m) with incredible vistas of Makalu (8,481m) and Island Peak before descending to sleep.

Everest Base Camp (5,364m) vs Kala Patthar (5,545m) Comparison

Everest Base Camp (5,364m): Located on the moving Khumbu Glacier directly beneath the tumbling Khumbu Icefall. You stand where summit expeditions stage their climbs. Note: Mt. Everest’s actual peak is partially obscured by the massive West Shoulder and Nuptse ridge when standing at Base Camp itself.

Kala Patthar (5,545m): The absolute visual climax of the trek! Ascended on Day 10 at sunrise, this high black ridge provides the closest, most dramatic, unobstructed panoramic view of Mt. Everest’s summit pyramid, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori glowing in golden morning sunlight.

Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) Clinics & Emergency Doctors

The Khumbu region features world-class high-altitude medical outposts operated by the non-profit Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) at Pheriche (4,280m) and Everest Base Camp (Everest ER).

Staffed by international and Nepali mountain medicine physicians, they conduct daily high-altitude safety seminars and provide hyperbaric Gamow bag treatments, oxygen therapy, and emergency triage for all trekkers.

Complimentary High-Altitude Alpine Gear Loan Service

To save you hundreds of dollars in equipment purchases, every trekker receives high-grade expedition equipment on loan during our pre-trek briefing in Kathmandu:

  • -20°C Goose Down Sleeping Bag: Sanitized and freshly dry-cleaned before every trek.
  • Expedition-Grade Down Jacket: Windproof, hooded 800-fill power down jacket for high-altitude evenings.
  • 80L Waterproof Duffel Bag: Heavy-duty expedition bag for porters (yours to keep as a souvenir!).

Kathmandu Airport Transfers, Hotel Pickup & Departure Logistics

From the moment you touch down at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), our representative awaits you at the arrival terminal holding a personalized company name-board with marigold garlands. You are transported in private air-conditioned vehicle to your 4-star hotel in Thamel.

On Day 14, we provide private airport transfer 3 hours prior to your international departure flight.

Trek Extension Options: Gokyo Lakes, Island Peak & Heli Return

Want to turn your trek into the ultimate Himalayan grand expedition? We offer seamless itinerary extensions:

  • Gokyo Lakes & Cho La Pass (+4 Days): Cross the 5,420m alpine glacier pass to the turquoise glacial lakes of Gokyo.
  • Island Peak Climbing (6,189m) (+3 Days): Summit an accessible Himalayan trekking peak with certified climbing Sherpas.
  • Helicopter Return from Gorak Shep: Fly directly from EBC back to Kathmandu in under 50 minutes.
  • Chitwan National Park Jungle Safari (+3 Days): Spot rhinos, Bengal tigers, and elephants in the tropical lowlands.

Eco-Trekking, Leave No Trace & Sagarmatha Pollution Control

We are dedicated partners with the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC). We practice strict Leave No Trace principles across every inch of the Khumbu trail:

  • Zero single-use plastic disposal on trail (all non-biodegradable waste is carried back down).
  • Promoting solar-heated teahouses to prevent high-altitude deforestation.
  • Supporting local Sherpa community schools, health posts, and trail repair projects.
🌱 Travel Responsibly: When you trek with us, you are directly supporting sustainable Himalayan conservation and indigenous Sherpa community development.

"Standing at Everest Base Camp and watching the sunrise from Kala Patthar was the most transformative experience of my life. Our lead Sherpa guide, Pasang, monitored our oxygen twice a day and kept the entire group healthy and motivated."

"Flawless organization from the airport pickup in Kathmandu to Lukla flights and teahouses. The 2 rest days in Namche and Dingboche made the high altitude manageable. 10/10 recommendation!"

Frequently Asked Questions: Everest Base Camp

Everything you need to know regarding Lukla flight logistics, altitude sickness protocols, permits, teahouse life, and booking terms.

Lukla Flights

How do Lukla flights operate and what about Ramechhap (Manthali) transfers?

During peak trekking months (Spring: March–May, Autumn: October–November), the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) routes Lukla flights through Manthali Airport in Ramechhap (4-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu) to avoid air-traffic congestion at Kathmandu's international runway. In off-peak months, flights operate directly from Kathmandu.

All-Inclusive Transfer: Best Treks Nepal provides private vehicle transportation between Kathmandu and Ramechhap, airport assistance, and guaranteed flight manifests included in your package.
Altitude Safety

How does your 14-day schedule prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

Our itinerary adheres to the golden rule of high-altitude mountaineering: climb high, sleep low. We spend two nights at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and two nights at Dingboche (4,410m) with mandatory active acclimatization day-hikes (Hotel Everest View 3,880m and Nangkartshang Peak 5,083m).

Active Medical Monitoring: Our licensed Sherpa guides conduct twice-daily blood oxygen saturation and heart-rate checks using clinical pulse oximeters. Supplemental bottled oxygen and 24/7 helicopter evacuation standby are maintained at all times.
Permits & Fees

What permits are required for Everest Base Camp and are they included?

Two mandatory permits are required for all foreign trekkers entering the Khumbu region:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit (SNPP): NPR 3,000 + 13% VAT (~$26 USD)
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit: NPR 3,000 (~$23 USD)
Zero Paperwork: Both permits are 100% arranged and paid for by Best Treks Nepal before departure and are fully included in the $1,350 package price.
Lodges & Food

What are teahouses like and what food is available on the trek?

Accommodations consist of clean, twin-share wooden rooms with comfortable foam mattresses, pillows, and warm blankets. Dining halls are heated every evening by central cast-iron stoves. Menus feature hygienic, carbohydrate-rich meals including authentic Nepali Dal Bhat (unlimited refills), noodle soups, fried rice, pasta, momos, eggs, and porridge.

Power & Wi-Fi: Solar charging for phones and cameras is available in all dining halls ($2–$4). Everest Link satellite Wi-Fi cards and local NTC/Ncell 4G data work across most villages.
Physical Fitness

How fit do I need to be for the 14-day EBC trek?

You do not need previous mountaineering or technical climbing experience. However, good cardiovascular fitness is recommended, as you will be walking 5 to 7 hours per day over rocky, uphill terrain with a light daypack (4–6kg). We recommend 8–12 weeks of aerobic preparation (hiking, stair climbing, running, and cycling) prior to arrival.

Insurance

What travel insurance policy is required for Everest Base Camp?

All trekkers must hold valid travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking up to 6,000m (20,000 ft) and emergency helicopter evacuation & hospital inpatient care.

Recommended Providers: World Nomads (Explorer Plan), Global Rescue, Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance, and Allianz Global Assistance.
Gear & Equipment

What gear do you provide and what do I need to bring?

We provide free of charge for use during the trek:

  • -20°C Alpine Sleeping Bag with clean cotton liner
  • 800-Fill Goose Down Jacket with hood
  • Waterproof 80L Duffel Bag (carried by porters)
  • Oxygen oximeter monitoring kit & First Aid

You only need to bring broken-in hiking boots, thermal layers, rain shell, personal toiletries, and a 30–35L daypack.

Booking Policy

How do I reserve my trek and what is the deposit policy?

You can book online through our Booking Portal with a 20% advance deposit payable by Visa, MasterCard, Wire Transfer, or Wise. The remaining 80% balance is settled upon arrival in Kathmandu prior to departure.

Flexible Rescheduling: Free date changes are permitted up to 30 days before departure with zero penalty fees.
