Geographically situated on the arid Tibetan plateau north of the main Himalayan spine (Annapurna and Dhaulagiri), Upper Mustang (historically the Kingdom of Lo) is an enclave of preserved Tibetan civilization. Shielded by the world's deepest gorge — the Kali Gandaki — the landscape is characterized by red sandstone cliffs, wind-sculpted pillars, and fortified desert settlements.

Founded in 1380 by King Ame Pal. A square fortified medieval city enclosed by 6-meter-high rammed earth walls with three 15th-century gompas (Jampa, Thubchen, and Chode).

The people of Upper Mustang, the Loba, speak a pure Tibetan dialect and preserve the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The 25th King of Lo (Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista) lived in the Royal Palace until his passing in 2016. Today, the royal lineage and high lamas oversee ancient ceremonies that have continued unbroken since 1380.
"Tenchi" (Prayer for World Peace) is an annual 3-day spiritual festival held in May within Lo Manthang's palace square. Monks from Choedhe Monastery don vibrant brocade robes and animal deity masks to enact the subjugation of demons through sacred dances.

The $500 statutory fee is included in our package prices.
Yes — absolutely! Because Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, it receives virtually zero monsoon rain. While the rest of Nepal experiences heavy downpours, Mustang enjoys clear, dry, and warm conditions (20–25°C), making it Nepal's finest summer trekking destination.
We take a spectacular 20-minute morning mountain flight from Pokhara to Jomsom (2,720m), flying between the 8,000m summits of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri through the Kali Gandaki Gorge. Alternatively, private 4WD overland transport from Pokhara to Jomsom is available via Beni.

The 3-day Tiji Festival (Tenchi) is a sacred ritual celebrating the triumph of Lord Dorje Jono over demons threatening the kingdom. Performed in May by monks wearing ornate masks and silk brocades in the King's palace courtyard in Lo Manthang. We offer dedicated festival departures.
