Declared Nepal's first Himalayan national park in 1976, Langtang National Park extends over 1,710 km² directly north of the Kathmandu Valley up to the Tibetan autonomous border. The park encompasses complex ecological gradients from subtropical sal forests along the Trishuli River to high glaciated massifs over 7,000m.
The region features three distinct trekking sectors:
Ascending alongside the tumbling Langtang Khola river gorge into the broad alpine pastures of Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by hanging glaciers and moraines.
A high-altitude holy pilgrimage basin with 108 oligotrophic glacial lakes sacred to Lord Shiva, crossing the dramatic Laurebina Pass (4,610m) into Helambu.
Community-managed homestay trails along the ancient Tibetan salt route through Gatlang, Tatopani natural hot springs, Thuman, and Briddhim.
From accessible 8-day valley treks to high-altitude pilgrimage circuits and deep cultural homestay trails.

The inhabitants of the upper Langtang Valley refer to themselves as Langtangpa, tracing their lineage directly to Tibet. They practice Nyingma-pa Tibetan Buddhism, speaking a distinct dialect. In Helambu to the south, the Hyolmo people maintain ornate monasteries and sacred meditation caves once frequented by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and the poet-saint Milarepa.
In 1953, Swiss dairy expert Werner Schulthess introduced European hard-cheese making techniques to Langtang using milk from native female yaks (Naks). Today, the government cheese factory at Kyanjin Gompa produces Nepal's most coveted alpine cheese.
Following complete post-2015 reconstruction, Langtang teahouses feature modern earthquake-resilient stone construction with cozy wood-burning stoves.
Bright twin rooms with clean mattresses and thick quilts. Many lodges in Kyanjin offer attached private bathrooms. Dining rooms are heated each evening by central stoves.
Hearty Sherpa stews (Shyakpa), freshly baked sea-buckthorn pies, momo dumplings, and freshly melted nak cheese toasts alongside standard dal bhat.
Solar charging available across all lodges. NTC and Ncell mobile data connectivity is reliable through Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa.
Essential gear for valley ascents and high-camp day pushes.
Everything you need to know about overland transport from Kathmandu, national park permits, teahouses, and acclimatization.
Langtang is unique among major Nepal trekking hubs because it requires no domestic flights. We drive 122 km from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi via Trishuli and Dunche. In our private 4WD Scorpio jeeps, the drive takes 6 to 7 hours through scenic sub-alpine hills and river valleys.
You need two standard permits: (1) Langtang National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000 + 13% VAT, approx. USD $26), and (2) TIMS Card (USD $20). If trekking via Helambu into Sundarijal, a Shivapuri National Park permit (NPR 1,000) is also required. All permits are arranged by Best Treks Nepal before departure.
The standard overnight turnaround hub at Kyanjin Gompa sits at 3,870m. From there, you can choose day hike summits: Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (4,984m). Both offer spectacular panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and Langshisha Ri while allowing you to sleep lower at Kyanjin.
The premier windows are Spring (March–May) for blooming rhododendron forests and warm daytime sunshine, and Autumn (September–November) for crystal-clear glacial vistas. For the high Laurebina Pass to Gosaikunda (4,610m), autumn offers dry, stable snow-free trails.
The entire teahouse infrastructure along the Langtang trail was rebuilt with modern stone and wood engineering. Teahouses in Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa feature private twin rooms, hot showers, WiFi, and central dining heating. Authentic Swiss-style yak cheese is made daily at Kyanjin Gompa.
