Everest Region FAQs

Quick answers to common questions about trekking in the Khumbu

What is the difference between EBC and Gokyo Lakes?

Everest Base Camp (EBC) is the classic "bucket list" trek focusing on the base of the world's highest peak. Gokyo Lakes is a quieter alternative featuring turquoise glacial lakes and what many consider a superior panoramic view of four 8,000m peaks from Gokyo Ri.

How difficult is trekking in the Everest region?

Most treks in this region are considered moderate to challenging. The primary challenge is the altitude, as most trails stay above 3,500m for several days. Good physical fitness and proper acclimatization are essential.

What permits do I need for the Everest region?

You need two main permits: the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit and the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit. We handle all these permits as part of our trekking packages.

Are there ATMs in the Everest region?

There are ATMs in Namche Bazaar and Lukla, but they can be unreliable due to weather or technical issues. We strongly recommend carrying enough cash in Nepalese Rupees from Kathmandu to cover personal expenses like charging, Wi-Fi, and snacks.

Can I see Mt. Everest from every trail?

No, Everest is often hidden by other giants like Lhotse and Nuptse. Iconic views are best from the Everest View Hotel (near Namche), Kala Patthar, and Gokyo Ri. On the main EBC trail, you first see Everest from the trail between Namche and Tengboche.
