Essential information for your journey into Nepal's wildest frontier
Lower Dolpa focuses on the stunning Phoksundo Lake and is a moderate trek. Upper Dolpa is a much longer, more remote expedition that crosses several high passes and reaches the sacred Shey Gompa. Upper Dolpa requires a more expensive restricted area permit ($500 for 10 days).
The journey starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a dramatic early morning flight into the mountain airstrip at Juphal. These flights are highly weather-dependent, so we recommend building in a few extra days to your itinerary.
Unlike most of Nepal, Dolpa is a great destination for Summer/Monsoon trekking (June-September). Much of the region lies in a rain shadow, keeping it dry while the rest of the country is wet. Spring and Autumn are also excellent, but winter is too cold and passes are often blocked by snow.
Yes, Dolpa is one of the last strongholds of the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. You'll see Bon monasteries (where you walk counter-clockwise) alongside Tibetan Buddhist sites. The culture here is incredibly ancient and has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Treks in Dolpa are considered challenging to difficult. The terrain is rugged, the trails are remote, and you'll be crossing multiple passes above 5,000m. Excellent physical fitness and previous high-altitude trekking experience are strongly recommended for Upper Dolpa expeditions.
