This challenging route circumnavigates Makalu via the technical north ridge, offering steep terrain, high altitude passes, and unparalleled views of the fifth-highest mountain and its surrounding giants.

01 Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Nepal! Meet our team for trek briefing and equipment check. Prepare for one of the world's most challenging alpine expeditions.

02 Gear Prep & Briefing

Explore Kathmandu heritage sites and conduct a detailed equipment check with your climbing team. Final altitude acclimatization day in the city.

03 Drive to Tumlingtar

Travel through the scenic Arun Valley to Tumlingtar. Meet your porters and finalize logistics for the expedition.

04 Trek to Khandbari

Begin the expedition with a 5-hour trek through subtropical forests along the Arun River to Khandbari (1,440m).

05 Khandbari to Rampur

Continue through verdant hills to Rampur (2,260m). Mountain views increase as we gain elevation.

06 Rampur to Num

Trek through rhododendron forests ascending to Num (2,580m). First views of major alpine peaks.

07-12 High Altitude Approach

Technical hiking across alpine terrain toward the North Ridge base. Intro to steeper gradients and rope work practice.

13 High Camp Summit Push

Push to North Ridge High Point (5,600m). Master technical climbing on steep ice and rock. Breathtaking 360-degree panoramas.

14-20 Return Journey

Technical descent and traverse back toward Tumlingtar. Celebrate your achievements before departing for home.

How technical is the North Ridge Trek?
This is a highly technical alpine expedition. It involves fixed ropes, ice axe work, and rock scrambling. Prior mountaineering experience and familiarity with climbing gear are mandatory.
What gear is provided?
We provide all group climbing gear including ropes, snow bars, and ice screws. Personal gear like harnesses, crampons, and ice axes can be rented from us in Kathmandu if needed.
Is this trek suitable for solo travelers?
Due to the technical nature and safety requirements, we only run this expedition for small groups (min 2 people). Solo travelers can join one of our fixed departure dates.
