Gosainkunda Lake FAQ

Click any day to expand the detailed route information

What is the religious significance of Gosainkunda?
Gosainkunda is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Hindus believe the lake was created by Lord Shiva's trident. Thousands of pilgrims visit during the Janai Purnima festival in August to take a holy dip in its waters, which are believed to wash away sins.
How difficult is the trek to Gosainkunda?
The trek is considered moderate. The main challenge is the rapid altitude gain from Dhunche (1,960m) to the lakes (4,380m). While the trails are well-defined, the steep ascents require good cardiovascular fitness and careful acclimatization.
Can I see other lakes besides Gosainkunda?
Yes! There are over 100 lakes in the Gosainkunda region. The most prominent ones near the main trail are Bhairab Kunda and Saraswati Kunda. Each has its own spiritual significance and stunning turquoise beauty.
What is the best time for this trek?
Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) are the best seasons. In spring, the rhododendrons are in full bloom. Autumn offers the clearest views of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung. Winter trekking is possible but the lakes may be frozen and the passes blocked by snow.
Is it possible to cross the Lauribina Pass?
Yes, many trekkers continue from the lakes over the Lauribina Pass (4,610m) to reach the Helambu region. This adds a challenging pass crossing to the itinerary but rewards you with some of the best panoramic views in the entire Langtang region.
