A Journey to the Emerald Lakes

The Gokyo Lakes trek is widely considered the most stunning alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp route. It leads you into the heart of the Khumbu through a different valley, leading to a series of six spectacular turquoise glacial lakes.

Beyond the mesmerizing lakes, the trek offers a climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m). From here, you'll witness a vista that many argue surpasses that of Kala Patthar, featuring four of the world's fourteen 8,000m peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

Traversing the Ngozumpa Glacier—the largest in the Nepal Himalayas—and staying in the high-altitude settlement of Gokyo, this trek is a perfect blend of natural wonder and cultural depth.

What is the best time for the Gokyo Lakes Trek?
The best times are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best views of the lakes and surrounding peaks.
How difficult is the Gokyo Lakes Trek?
It is considered a moderate to challenging trek. While it doesn't involve technical climbing, the altitude (reaching over 5,300m) and sustained walking for 5-7 hours daily require good physical fitness and acclimatization.
Do I need travel insurance for this trek?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. It must specifically cover high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m) and include emergency helicopter evacuation, as there are no roads in the Gokyo region.
Is the Gokyo Lakes Trek better than EBC?
"Better" is subjective, but Gokyo offers quieter trails, the stunning turquoise lakes, and a view from Gokyo Ri that many trekkers believe is superior to the view from Kala Patthar near EBC.
